/ Posts / Eagle River Just Got A lot Cooler!
For the first time since 2018 Ullr has sent enough cold weather to the Northwoods for the Eagle River Ice Castle to be constructed.
Volunteer firefighters and local volunteers will work from January 8th-11th to construct the 20-foot-tall ice castle, built entirely by hand with ice blocks taken from Silver Lake.
Nearly 3,000 twelve-inch-thick blocks will be cut out of 57-acre Silver Lake and hauled to the Railroad Depot in downtown Eagle River.
Each block weighs between 60-70 pounds and is moved using some of the original equipment from 1933 including an ice saw and conveyor system.
Volunteers use their artistic freedom to construct a unique castle each year with colored flood lights for visitors and locals to enjoy.
Usually, the Ice Castle stands until mid-February, but it is anyone's guess how long the defrost will take. It is one of the most photographed attractions in Eagle River with thousands of visitors each year the weather permits.
