Local Business Spotlight: Mary's Kate's Wine Bar

There are few things I love more in life than wine, so when I heard about a wine bar opening in downtown Eagle River, it would be an understatement to say I was excited. My last career was in the wine industry and as a former resident of Napa and self-proclaimed wine geek, I tend to be pretty critical when it comes to wine bars. After several visits over the last few years, I can attest to the fact that Mary Kate's offers a diverse and exciting wine list, and when combined with the inviting atmosphere and interactive events, rivals establishments in cities across the United States.

I had the honor of meeting John and Katie when they were in the process of opening the wine bar during the pandemic, and to witness the progress from the beginning has been nothing short of amazing. Every time I am in Eagle River I pop in (you should too!) and there is always something new and intriguing on the menu. I have consistently found wines I have never seen on any BTG list in the Northwoods, and rarely see in other places. BAROLO!?! They are pouring a flipping Barolo by the glass in Eagle River Wisconsin? Somebody pinch me. 

It turns out I am not the only one loving what they are doing at Mary Kate's, in June of 2022 they received the Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator. To earn this, recipients wine lists must offer at least 90 selections with an assortment of quality producers at price points that will appeal to a wide array of wine lovers. Accurate information on each wine as well as the presentation of wine lists are also contributing factors.

Mary Kate's offers wine flights, a constantly changing list, monthly wine events, food pairings, and private wine dinners. It is inspiring to see a few hard-working locals with a love for wine have such an impact on wine culture in the Northwoods.  Cheers to you, Mary Kate's!
